Harvest Moon Syrahcchanalia
| ||
"Good wine is a necessity of life for me." --Thomas Jefferson Oye, Dionysians! Last month's Harvest Moon marked our lucky 13th month of continuous operation and oenological homage. Lo que sera, syrah. A number of tasty and well-crafted wines were on display at the October assemblage. Of particular note were the Cote Rotie, the Saint Joseph, Australian "Gunslingers", and a local brew from GV Cellars. Go Suisun City! Who knew? The gathering started in the cozy confines of the Little House Cafe where we sipped on some champagne, chardonnay, and a couple of syrahs whilst the collective organism slowly assembled. We then stretched out onto the patio where we quite literally chilled for the next hour or two, loquaciously imbibing, conniving, and thriving. Lord Chestnut kicked off the almost formal outdoor tasting with a brief introduction to the noble and twisted history of the Syrah Grape. References at bottom. Drink list below. "La Valliere", Cote Rotie 2005, Joel & Romaine Champet Saint Joseph 2005 Vielles vignes, Phillipe Fuary Lost Canyon 2005, Russian River "Trenton Station" Justin 2005, Paso Robles Binder Mitchell "Gunslingers" 2004, Barossa Valley Domaine des Tours 2004, Vaclause (Rhone) Rosenblum, Syrah, Sonoma 2004 "Hillside Vineyards" Ram's Leap 2004, Western Plains NSW Rancho Arroyo Grande 2003, Arroyo Grande Valley Fess Parker 2003, Santa Barbara Frei Brothers Reserve 2003, Russian River, GV Cellars 2002, Estate Syrah Spinifex "Papillon", Barossa Valley (not Syrah;-) 2005 Rosenblum, Pinot Noir, Napa 2004 "Lyons Vineyard" La Velona, Brunello di Montelcino, 2000 ...and a couple of Bruts from Pipe Sonoma and Mumm Napa. As usual, we'd like to thank Rick @ Feelgood Bakery for once again providing us with several epi loaves (my favorite), Amy & Denise from Thirsty Bear for bringing pate, huckleberries, Marcona & caperberry goodness, the Little House for a big roast beef, and everyone else who brought a jug of wine, a loaf of bread, and thou bad self. A shout out to the contrarian, Mr. Fritz, who brought the Brunello. Lo que sera, indeed. An Australian Shiraz that was meant to go tete-a-tete with the Cote Rotie was inadvertently swapped at the wine store with a Grenache/Cinsault concoction by the same label. Thankfully, the proprietor remedied the situation 'ere I mentioned it. (Thanks, Jeff.) Now, who amongst ye wouldst help me tap it? Lots of ideas on deck for a November gathering. Stay tuned for updateson that, as well as a survey on preferred schedules, wine interests, and feasting ideas.
