Rhone Rager
2007-11-27

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Last night's assembly at Pappo was a grand success. Thanks to everyone
who came out -- and for bringing the 24 or so bottles of primarily
Southern Rhone wine that we enjoyed. A full listing of the selections
will eventually make it to the new website.

Thanks in particular to our host, Chef John Thiel, who came early,
stayed late, wouldn't let me wash the dishes, made a duck rillette,
and broke out some special wine selections of his own. True hospitality
in the Dionysian spirit. Huzzah! Show John some love by coming down to
Pappo Restaurant for lunch or dinner some time. Or just duck in for a
quick glass of wine at the bar and enjoy some fried olives.

Special thanks also to Brian Blewer, McGees' premier mixologist, for
sharing a bounty of meats and cheeses and a novel interpretation of
cassoulet -- a real crowd pleaser that provided quite a few revelers
with tasty to-go packages.

Great to see some new faces, like Jodie from Kermit Lynch wines and
Matt from Blacksmith Cellars. I couldn't help but note that Matt's
private label concoction for Pappo was drained quickly; we'll be
looking for more.

Our free-form enological forays have been great fun; however, there has
been some call for more structure in the proceedings. As such, the
High Council will be conferring with Members of Special Distinction on
more focused tasting formats. Some future gatherings will likely involve
curated selections and a fixed price around $20.

Speaking of futures, there's lots on deck. Tastings of champagne, spanish
wines, ports and sherries, and much more are on the horizion. We'll also
have some family events in the spring, with mask making and planting of
flowers and herbs. We're also looking to partner with some Slow Food folks,
local warehouse wineries, and some other local businesses for future food
& wine events. Like many of us, I also look forward to a triumphant return
to the Bocce Ball court.

'Tis a glorious morning. I trust everyone in attendance last night
feels similarly;-)

Cheers,
Michael
