Holiday Bubbly & Sweetness
| ||
Well, folks, it's been another great trip around the Sun. The year ended for us in cork-popping fashion in a lovely space populated with a very cool origami exhibit. If you've never checked out Rhythmix, you should give it a whirl; neat little art gallery, a performance space, and classes for adults and kids alike. (http://rhythmix.org/) I am happy to say that our host, Managing Director Jennifer Holmes, was the picture of hospitality and indulged us for well over an hour past our scheduled adjournment time. Thanks to everybody that kicked in cash for the mounds of cheeses and fresh berries, as well the numerous bottles of champagne, port, vin santo, and other dessert wines. Yet again, thanks to Feel Good Rick for the many loaves of bread, to Mona's Table Mona for a platter of savory goodies, and to Du Vin Dan for a bringing a number of bottles, a couple of which narrowly escaped to my refrigerator. Many thanks also to Drew and cousin Rick for helping setup and tend the makeshift bar. To whomever put a $50 bill in my pocket: please announce yourself. And thank you. Remember, your contributions to the Dionysian Club help ensure that overprivileged drinkers in Alameda and surrounding areas can continue to learn about and taste from the worlds great wine regions. This is important work and we need your support. Always good to see new faces among the assembled stalwarts. Very pleased to see list lurkers Danielle & Pat finally deigned to make the trek from Far West Alameda; great also to see newcomers Shelley and friend Dan representing Alameda's Far East. Sorry to see that sickness and the holiday schedule cut into attendance somewhat, as this was yet another great venue and, once again, we were in jeopardy of having too much food and wine. Of course, in the pantheon of possible problems, we could face much worse. Thankfully, Dionysian appetities helped ensure that our surpluses were suitably diminished. You people make me proud. No crazy old champagnes or vintage port offerings, but a respectable sampling of both worlds nonetheless. Below is the list of libations, arranged first by type and then very loosely in terms of crowd acceptance. Opinions and mileage may vary. All champagnes were blanc de blancs brut. Whistles where initially whetted with a Gloria Ferrer Sonoma Brut. --- Domaine Chandon by Tattinger 2003 (Carneros!) Michel Dervin (Cuchery/Champagne) Moet & Chandon White Star (Epernay/Champagne) Roederer Estate (Anderson Valley) Boumard (Cremant de Loire) Agrapart & Fils "Terroirs" (Avize/Champagne) --- Smith Woodhouse - Late Bottle Vintage 1995 Warre's Otima - 10 year Tawny Ramos Pinto - Tawny Grahams "Six Grapes" - Ruby Rosenblum - Zinfandel Port 1991 --- Felsina Vin Santo (Chianti Classico 1999) EOS Muscato (Paso Robles 2005) --- (Leslye, I still have the Schramsberg. If Ronnie is feeling better, perhaps we can toast his return to health? Do give a call, dear. Dan M, the Lambrusco performed service the next evening at the Cisco Kid's party. Thanks again.) Don't forget our educational mission! If you haven't already read up on this stuff, here's some homework: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Champagne_(wine) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Port_wine Looking forward... we'll be taking a sabbatical in January, but we plan to return to our indulgences with a double-feature in February beginning with a Ground Hog Day tasting and followed by the Feast of Lupercalia. Best wishes to all for a bountiful new year filled with passion and intensity. TSO http://dionysianclub.org/ .
