Vodka & Vitality
2008-02-02

Hello again and many thanks to all who demonstrated their fortitude
in confronting the cold and rain to attend our Groundhog Day vodka
tasting affair. Special marks for the couple that migrated down
from Marin for the occasion.

Without doubt, the Dionysian Spirit award goes to my personal heroes,
Dave & Sarah, parents of two young ones, who not only got a babysitter
and confronted the foul weather, but took BART from the city... and
returned from our vodka tasting by way of the Mission district to
attend a show at 12 Galaxies. Huzzah! Alameda homebodies take note.
I'm afraid our quaint little island will be mistaken for an infirmary
if some of you folks don't start getting out more often;-)

In addition to copious amounts of vodka from Poland, Russia,
Scandanavia and the US of A, our assembly was blessed with a somewhat
unexpected bounty of food offerings. Mona provided us with two pans
full of delicious stuffed cabbages whilst Amy brought a big tray of
toast & salmon with some fancy fine topping. Mighty neighborly.
Y'all should show these lovely ladies some love and go eat at their
restaurants some time:

Honorable mentions in the food department go to Steve C. for pickled
whitefish and Ross for smoked trout crostini. (Oh! we loves the fishes
'cause they're soooo delicious.) And Rick K., your bread continues to
makes us feel good. So did the vodka and organic Gravenstein apple juice.

Alas, there's something I don't feel good about: I failed to toast
our dear host, Drew, or administer the vodka quiz and give-away.
For these my sins, I will seek redemption. Let me begin by noting that
there is a considerable quantity of vodka and aqua vit in reserve and
I look forward to contacting all who generously donated to join me in
an ethanol-based purification ritual. Let my penance be your pleasure.
Fie on fusel oils!

Looking ahead...
Initial planning has already begun for an Alameda Fourth of July Parade
entry. Stay tuned for your opportunity to participate in float building
and patriotic pelvic gyration. Later this summer, an excursion to
Angel Island is also in the works. Otherwise, our next event is still
up in the air, but will probably be sometime in March. We'll be returning
to a red wine theme.

Until then, consider putting the februa back in February. Looks like
this reporter will miss Lupercalia (2/15) on account of travel to LA;
nonetheless, I would encourage you all to celebrate that special day
in your own special way...

Meanwhile, here's to living gras on this cool mardi morning.
