Spanish Flight
Tasty Tempranillo

2008-05-05

Greetings Dionysians,

Two weeks ago Monday, our Spanish Flight cruised the land of
Tempranillo. 'Twas a lovely excursion indeed; a viticultural
voyage graced with a bounty of pulchritudinous people, laudable
libations, and sheer savory goodness.

We found safe harbor in the cozy confines of the Hob Nob where our
dear host, Chef Amy, outdid herself in cooking a giant paella of
most tasty proportions. She also helped provide lots of stuffed
piquillo peppers, lamb empenadas, two large tortilla espanoles,
and 4 lbs. of Manchego cheese. True generosity in the Dionysian
spirit! Members take note.

To keep the lusty crowds at bay during last minute organization, a
cold and refreshing Dibon cava was served. Thence, after some
introductory remarks and notable announcements, the following four
Tempranillo-based selections were sampled in our primary tasting:

- Vina Tondonia 1998 Rose (Rioja)
- Prima 2005 (Toro)
- Pesquera 2004 (Ribera del Duero)
- Muga 2003 Seleccion Especial (Rioja)

In the overstock and special visitors department, we also partook
of the following:

- Vina Gravonia 1996 Blanco (Rioja)
- Valduero Reserva 1998 (Ribera del Duero)
- Muga "Prado Enea" Gran Reserva 2000 (Rioja)
- Marquez de Riscal Reserva 2003 (Rioja)
- Chozas Carrascal "Las Ocho" 2003 (Utiel-Requena)
- Servilio 2005 (Ribera del Duero)

Many, many thanks to Chef John T. and Du Vin Dan who stepped in to
set up, pour wine, and educate where this reporter failed. Special
thanks also to Denise and Nicole and all those who helped clean up
and pack up and move the after party down to Lucky 13, where our
surpluses were commensurately reduced. We are a movable feast. To
Arnie, to Professor Longhair, to everyone that pitched in a bit
extra, I toast your health and well-being.

Returning to the aforementioned announcements, be aware that
Dionysians dare to dream ...and hallucinate. A recurring vision is
putting a float in this year's Alameda Fourth of July parade. Yes,
we'd like to stimulate America's birthday party with a little
floatation of our own -- and we need your energy and creative
inspiration to help realize that dream.

We'll be having a number of creative tete-a-tetes over the next
couple of months, full of wine, sniffing, paint, paper-maiche,
cocktails, and more, starting with tomorrow night's Full Moon. Our
Creative Director, El Chupacabre, will be offering guidance. High
Councillors, Special Members, and others seeking the betterment of
mankind are all expected to participate. Please consult with me or
Lord Chestnut, if interested.

On deck: Malbec (6/1). For reference, check our budding website:
