Aurora Arborealis
2009-04-24

Friends, Dionysians, Countrymen-

'Twas two weeks ago tonight when we did honor Spring and Arbor Day
with wine and lamb and jovial discourse at Julie's. We would like
to thank our fine hostess once again.

The warmth of Spring was ironically feted on a cool and blustery night;
and yet, the cozy confines of Julie's tree house and tea house provided
steadfast refuge for man, woman, and child alike. (Lots o' chil'ens
as it turned out.) Steadfast, as well, was the mighty goat head, whose
papier mache hide laughed at the winter rains, braved the Arbor day
winds, confronted the blows of teenage ruffians whilst we partied
unawares, and still, as a true icon of perserverance and vitality,
took a victory ride down Park Street to close Arbor Day with a nightcap
at Speisekammer.

The celebration at Julie's almost reflected a stunning level of
organization, including membership and activity sign ups, a raffle,
and plant give aways. We're still working the kinks out, but we love
to work with kinks.

Change is underfoot here in the the Year of the Ox. Newly ascendent
to the High Council are: the enchanting Queen Circe, and his eminence,
The Great Shiraz. Retiring in a bloodless transition are Lord Chestnut
and The Raging Bull, who move on to establish a Council of Elders.

Our website will be overhauled in the near future. Meanwhile, enjoy
the quaint and dated version here:

We're getting crafty again, with prototyping of ritual masks
currently underway in secret High Council sessions. We'll be calling
for wider participation in this activity shortly.

Meanwhile, there's much more art, wine, food, music, booze, greenery,
and scenery to be had about town. Autobody art gallery has a closing
show tomorrow night (Saturday 5/8); recommended. Julie's has got folk
music every Tuesday night in May. Spiesekammer, music most every
weekend. Add Acquacotta, Blue Dot, C'era Una Volta, Hangar One,
Hob Nob, the USS Hornet, the Fireside, Forbidden Island,
the Little House, Lucky 13, Lucky Juju, Pappo, the parks,
Rock Wall, Rhythmix, yada, yada... 'tis an embarrassment of riches.
Mona, who provided our lovely lamb for Arbor Day, is serving one of
the best brunches in town every Saturday morning... and yet I remain s
hocked by how many people don't even know where Mona's Table is.
Y'all need to get out more. Maybe even make it over a bridge.

Speaking of which, Alameda was poorly represented at the Boiler Bar
fiesta in West Oakland on 5/2. Y'all missed out. Nonetheless, the time
for redemption is at hand. Never too late to channel the Dionysian
spirit. Manifest some passion for living. Get crafty.
And get outta tha house, pleez.

Pointedly yours,
The Satyrical One

PS. Recalling the vino, Option #1 was a "traditional" Burgundy available
at Du Vin Fine Wines (Camus-Bruchon 2006 Savigny-les-Beaunes, $25?).
Option #2 was a spicy, sweet Rhone blend (Domaine des Tours 2006, $20);
Option #4, a cheap, tasty, screw top Zinfadel from Amador
(Shenandoah, $12); both available from Farmstead Wine and Cheese.
Other options were a Rioja and a Uruguyan Tannat. More options remain
to be drunk. Contact me for details.
