In Greek Mythology, the goat-god Dionysos represents drinking and fertility, the forest and unbridled nature. Dionysos’s chief symbols are clusters of grapes and grape leaves, the thyrsos, the phallus, wreaths of laurel and ivy, and a drinking goblet. His totemic animals are the bull, the panther, the snake, the dolphin and, of course, the goat. The goat is an icon of perseverance and vitality and is said to signify one who wins through politics and wit rather than war and confrontation. Dionysos is always accompanied by his followers, the Bacchantes, who are all very friendly and enjoy indulging a variety of passions. As latter day Bacchantes, Dionysian Club members assemble to enjoy fine wine, tasty food, edifying conversation, and spreading good cheer. Get your goat. Become an icon of perseverance and vitality in your neighborhood. Become a Dionysian.
